Today, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence (AI Act) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The aim of the Regulation is to improve the functioning of the internal market by establishing a uniform legal framework for the development, placing on the market, putting into service and use of artificial intelligence systems in the Union, promoting the deployment of human-centred and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring a high level of protection of health, safety and fundamental rights. It also establishes bans on certain AI practices, specific requirements for high-risk AI systems and obligations for operators of such systems, and harmonised transparency rules for AI systems.
As regards as next steps, the regulation enters into force on the 20th day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and applies from 2 August 2026, with the exception of certain specific provisions.
